INTERVIEW: TMT (Tickle Me Timbers)
Fort Myers, FL, United States based rock/emo/screamo quartet TMT (which stands for Ticlke Me Timbers) is not an ordinary rock band. aP interviewed Neal, the drummer of TMT.
You truly don't do things the normal way. You said before you're basically a band that is not supposed to be taken seriously at all. What I've understood, you take other parts of real songs and crop them together to make it sound like it's a whole new song. Where and when did you get the idea?
- We used to make short movies just for fun and one day early on January 3rd, 2006. We decided to make a short movie series about a fake band and pretend to play the instruments but have horrible music on purpose. As we were making the video, we needed to have a fake song to play to so I cropped together The Used's "I Caught Fire" guitar in the beginning of the song and Good Charlotte's "The River" drums at the beginning of the song. And it actually sounded pretty good for fake music. So we made two short funny videos of a fake band called TMT (Tickle Me Timbers) and we actually wanted to finish the song that I started making for the short video just for fun. That's how our first song "Cuts Between My Toes" was created. It souned good to us so we actually finished a full album ("The Infection Has Spread") and were selling it to people at our school and we made almost $40 off the CD's the first week.
When I listened to your songs I noticed some parts I'm familiar with (The Used etc). Name two or three bands you like the most? What kind of critic have you received from people? You've added some vocals to your songs. What does the lyrics generally speaking deal with?
- Our most biggest influences are definitely My Chemical Romance and The Used. But some others of mine are Switchfoot, Saosin, Thrice, Say Anything, and Taking Back Sunday. Some of my brother's (Ray) are Bring Me The Horizon, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, Sublime, and Panic at the Disco.
- Mostly overall, we've had a positive reaction. Especially when it comes to some of our close friends, they think it's really entertaining and laugh their ass off whenever we show them a new song. As I've said before, we're not a serious band and we're just trying to entertain people. But online, we've had a pretty good reaction too even though barely anyone has heard our songs but if they have, it's always funny how they respond and think it's creative.
- Oh, well usually in the middle of the day out of nowhere we will have random thoughts about a subject that interests us or entertains us and we're just like "Hey, we should make a song about that". So that's how every TMT song came to be. Sometimes I write the vocals out first before we record but I try to make them make sense but in a way that they're not to be taken seriously. And then sometimes I'll just tell Ray to talk/sing about a certain idea or subject and he can go on forever which is pretty reative of him. So basically half of our vocals are written and thought out and the other half come out of nowhere for the first time from Ray. It saves us time and always turns out to be good.
What are the near future sights of TMT?
- Right now we're writing and recording our sophomore album "Killing Loneliness". Almost half of the songs have been recorded and finished and more than half have been written and are ready for vocals. We will be releasing the album either in March or April, but no promises of an exact due date as of now. Our first single from the new album "Buckingham Palace" was posted on our myspace a little while ago and we've had some positive feedpack from it. Also, we're hoping to shoot another video in the future like we did for "Mountain Dew: The Ultimate Shrink Ray".
And finally, you're the first band to be interviewed by aP. How did you find aP and how did you react?
I actually believe that aP added us on our myspace and we checked out aP's myspace and decided we wanted to give this aP thing a shot. So far, everything's going good. You guys are actually taking action and know that we want to be discovered and promoted. I have a good feeling about this and I hope everything works out for the best.
